OUR OCEAN AND FISHERMEN ARE FACING A CRISIS.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Electric fishing is emptying the ocean and threatening our coastal economies. Electric current should NEVER be used, under any circumstances, to catch marine life. Electric fishing is banned in many parts of the world, including in China, but no longer in Europe.

To help us protect our ocean, our future and coastal fishermen around Europe, we urge you to call on your public decision-makers to support the full and definitive prohibition of electric fishing in Europe.

THE NORTH SEA IS BEING ELECTROCUTED!

Every day and even night, Dutch fishing vessels in the North Sea drag heavy electric trawls along the seabed. They damage marine habitats and electrocute all marine life, indiscriminately.

The electric current impacts both the hatching of eggs and survival of juvenile fish. Industrial electric trawlers discard up to 70% of their catch: it’s an ecological disaster! The electric shock causes such violent, uncontrolled convulsions in fish that up to 70% of large cod are left with a fractured spine and internal bleeding.

Coastal fishers who fish in the same area as Dutch electric trawlers have never seen anything like it. They speak of a “desert” and a “graveyard” after the passage of an electric trawler…

Electric fishing doesn’t just devastate marine ecosystems: it brings small-scale fishers and family businesses to bankruptcy. This could well be the final battle between industrial companies and small-scale coastal fishers.

Those who fish in the most sustainable way are going out of business because of irresponsible public decision-making. European institutions MUST prohibit electric fishing in Europe to save the future of our ocean and coastal economies before it’s too late.
